For those who prefer to watch instead of read, here is a video:
Types of Ornaments Available
There are many types of different ornaments that exist to help show off your festive style and identity. In a nutshell, here is what you can have:
Tree Toppers: Placed at the very top (tip) of your Christmas tree. A star tree topper is most used. However, variants such as Angel Tree Toppers, Snow Flake Tree Toppers, and even Ribbon Tree Toppers, have been increasingly used. The best thing about the toppers at Masons is that they are suitable for use with any different height of Christmas tree.
Baubles: What most know as ‘Christmas tree balls’. Baubles are ornaments that you can hang onto each branch of your Christmas tree. They are most commonly in the shape of a ball of various sizes, colours and textures. However, at a good Christmas store such as Masons, expect to find other funky shapes and designs such as gingerbread man baubles, snowman baubles, or even nutcracker baubles! Baubles are typically made of acrylic. Glass baubles are known to be extremely premium, giving off a different rich type of effect.
Tree Picks and Sprays: These are ornaments that you stuff and shove into the tree. They usually exist in the form of berries, flowers, or leaves. Basically, they are stemmed. They are perfect for filling up your tree and exist in all sizes, shapes, designs, and colours. Picks refer to the smaller stemmed ornaments such as mini berries, while sprays refer to something relatively longer (half arm length). Pine cones are also a popular ornament that operates the same way.
Ribbons: Christmas tree ribbons usually cover a larger surface area, like large artificial flowers do. They are perfect for filling up your tree quickly.
Garlands: Anything you can coil around your Christmas tree with. Tinsel is a traditional option. However, most regard it to be cheap looking. Garlands may also refer to decorative strings you decorate your staircases or door frames with.
Lights: Self-explanatory, LED string lighting to coil around your tree with.
Colour Guide
Now that we know the different types of ornaments that exist, we need to know which colours we should narrow down on. We should decide on the colour theme. Here are some that we can choose from:
Warm Theme: Example of colours of this theme are red, brown, bronze, gold, and maroon.
Cool Theme: Example of colours of this theme are silver, blue, turquoise, teal, white, and grey.
Solid Colour: Solid colour themes are popular too. It is not uncommon to see a tree decked in either pure gold, pure silver, or pure red even. In recent years, having a ‘White Christmas’ has also been becoming increasingly common.
Pastel Theme: An up-and-coming design theme that you could experiment with this year. Pastel colours of all sorts cannot go wrong when mixed.

Deciding on a colour theme can depend on many factors. Here is a list of factors that can help you make a better decision more quickly:
- Existing Decor Theme of Home: If your home is using a lot of woods or warm colours such as wooden laminates, or beige tiles or marble, a warm themed decorated tree would be suitable. However, if the decoration theme of your home is more towards white, metals, and black, a cool themed tree would be perfect.
- Desired Decor Theme of this Festive Season: Sometimes, families wish to have the Christmas tree decorated with different decorations theme every year. Therefore, something that is not the same as the previous 5 years would be good should such be the case.
Pro Tip: The good thing about shopping from a large and reputable store such as Masons is that you can easily filter its thousands of ornaments by colour, shape, texture, or size!

How to Decorate
What we have here is a summarised guide. For an extremely detailed picture or video step by step guide, check out our How to Decorate Your Christmas Tree article.
Decorating your Christmas tree is easy! However, mix up the steps and you might create some unnecessary issues later.
Step 1: Hanging Your Lights
You should always coil your lights first around your tree, from bottom to top, because you will need to hide the lights inside the branches of the tree. This will be very hard to do to an already decorated tree.
Refer to this video (on left) to see exactly how to do it.

Step 2: Baubles and Tree Picks and Sprays
Start hanging your baubles evenly around the tree, then followed by stuffing tree picks and sprays to the still exposed areas.
Pro-Tip: Large sprays can be cut into smaller pieces and scattered around your Christmas tree
Garlands should go next if any.
Step 3: Setting up your Star Tree Topper
We use the exact same approach as if we were handling this for a real life Christmas tree.
Simply place the star at the head of the tree.
Reinforce with a cable-tie if you have playful children who would shake the tree and if you are afraid of it dropping on someone’s head as a result of it. This video below shows you very clearly how to do it.
Add Ons: Tree Skirts or Collars
Complete your look with our range of Christmas tree Skirts and Christmas tree Collars. These help to cover the base of your tree, along with unsightly wires if any.
When buying either, the product page of each tells you which tree skirt or collar is suitable for which Christmas tree.
